First 5 San Francisco/Preschool For All Award for Excellence
Our curriculum emphasizes learning through direct experience and discovery, where creative projects foster active learning and the development of critical thinking skills. The School’s curriculum is a Project-Based approach, using strategies that enable teachers to guide students through in-depth studies of real-world topics. In the course of their work/play, children learn to listen to instruction and acquire basic academic skills that will help them to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.
What is a Projects-Based Curriculum?
Children decide together to investigate an area of interest to them and they choose a project, such as “Places People Live.” Through each project they develop critical thinking skills as they ask questions related to the project. Children may work on a project for a few weeks or for several months. In the process of their project work, they learn vocabulary and develop literacy in Cantonese and English. They increase math proficiency with counting, measuring and patterning. They expand their social skills as they experience team work and cooperation while learning to problem-solve as they draw, construct and interact with each other and their teachers.
